Final Refinement

24/2/2014

After receiving feedbacks from lecturers, I've taken their feedback to further improve the design for the installation.

Feedback given for design are:
The fonts in the story are not visible enough, change the font or the colour of the fonts.
The level design is not visible enough, change colour of the background to make it more visible as it go more difficult, cold colour -> warm colour.

Therefore after taking their comments, I've proceeded to refine the design.





















Also I've changed the design of Sang Kancil as I further researched on mouse deer I noticed that mouse deer looked differently compared to deer.





Also, I've changed the font colour inside the introduction video and created the ending story and the landing page when the installation is idle.

After finishing the designs of the installation, I've helped out Gerry and Angela on decorating the space of our installation, placing the mat and adjusting the projector. I've also helped to decorate around the projection with leaves.

26/2/2014

Today, lecturer invited a guest who have non-design background to visit our installation. She is happy with our installation, however there're some problem on the design as she commented. The introduction video and the game play art style doesn't match where it makes the design of the game looked cheap. Therefore I'll have to change the design of the game play in order to make this installation presentable in Publika on April.

Intro Story, Beta Testing

After Angela summarizes the story and drew a rough storyline of the story of Sang Kancil, I've to design the introduction of the story where it gives and idea to the audience of what is happening.

I've design the story in a more ancient way, cave art where it shows that the folklore is a very old story from Malaysia. I've used Photoshop the create the story and edit it in After Effects.

We've done our set-up a day before Beta testing to prevent last minute rushing on the day also to let us to have more time for troubleshooting on the installation.

Beta test live date. Our installation failed to be presented due to technical problems, the game play couldn't work on Arduino. However feedbacks are still given to us based on what we have. Feedbacks from different lecturers and tutor are recorded down for further refinement.

Material Shopping

Today, I've refine the UI for the game play and send it to Yaw, the technical leader to make the design work.

Besides that, the group and I went to shop for the material needed for alpha testing. We bought nails from Ace Hardware, carpets & cloth from Daiso.

UI Design 2

I've designed 3 different levels for the game play of Sang Kancil dan Buaya. As the game moves on from one level to another, the difficulty of the game increases.


The route of the level gets longer as the level increases, also it requires more jumping for the user as the level increases.

I've also change the size of the main character - Sang Kancil for it to be bigger because the previous design it is too small for the user to feel immerse in the game.

Besides that, I've also created our front page of our game play. Since it's a folklore based game, I've made it more classic and ancient with the colour of the text, font and also the text design:

UI Design

While the group members went to shop for materials, I've designed the run cycle of Sang Kancil where it has to have the continuous running animation.

Also when user jump, Sang Kancil has to give the feedback of jumping, I've also designed the jumping part.


Also I've designed the look and feel of the first level of the game play where the Sang Kancil has to jump on the crocodile to prevent falling into the water.

Again we changed our idea again due to rejection and also limited man power and knowledge on Kinect. Therefore, we changed our system from Kinect to Arduino, a more familiar hardware and software for us. Thus, we have to change our idea again due to the restriction. We decided to change our idea from cultural dance to Malaysia's Folklore - Sang Kancil and Buaya. 

Our idea is to promote Malaysia's folklore as it is fading off in the younger generation.

After fixing on the final idea, I have to redesign the UI again. I've prepared moodboard for the UI design, inspired from wayang kulit. I wanted the design to be a shadow art because in Malaysia, old story are told using wayang kulit, shadow art. Therefore I wanted our installation to tell the narrative story remains the concept behind it. Therefore, I designed the UI using silhouettes.

After submitting our video documentation, lecturers not satisfy with the UI design as the closet I've done might send out a different message rather than a simple choosing cloths from different races.

They suggested I can design using more iconic sign to lead the user.
Therefore, I've redesigned the UI in different shapes and colours and a more modern feel for the installation:

Ideation 3

20/1/2014

We brainstormed again for the installation we have to execute. We currently behind schedule due to multiple rejections. After the critique session, we try to execute based on our lecturer's feedback - we decided to create a photo booth which record down the movements of user. Then making a .gif file of them and send to them.

After brainstorming, we proceed to our own role. I as the design leader have to create a prototype of the UI of the installation. I've proceed to find images on Google and start to clean up the photos for video documentation that is about to be handed in.

Today is another day where we focus on our own roles. I continue to design the UI for video documentations.









































I've decided to design closet as the UI for the installation because of the traditional cloths lies within it. Also different patterns symbolizes different races of the traditional cloths.

















Also I've designed the prototype of the card that contains the .gif of the user as a reward. After finish designing everything, I've send the files to Angela for her to compile for the video documentation.

Second Rejection

Presentation of Project Plan

After finishing our project plan and also the presentation slides. We are to present to our lecturer of our changed of ideas. Our leader - Angela is absent today due to personal issue.

Yaw as the representative of the group leader for the presentation day. We presented our idea, but the idea did not manage to impress our lecturers due to the lack or creativity on the interaction. It is too plain although users will be able to know about the basic gestures after playing with the installation. However, the installation is not fun enough to interact with.


Our idea has been rejected. But lecturer gave us feedback that would probably make the installation more interesting by rewarding the users with a bigger reward. They also suggested us to create cultural dance move and we can record the dance moves done by the user and send it to them.

Ideation 2

After the proposal rejection. We've set up meeting to brainstorm a better idea. This time, we try to think of an idea which is more on problem focused

We thought of a few problem which are: identity, environment, anti-social, communication and etc.

We finished off without having any idea on this day, just brainstorming and plain researches.

14/1/2014

Today, after brainstorming for a day the group decided to change project S.A.M into a Malaysian culture installation. We have our problem focused - foreigner do not understand our culture, basic greeting's gestures from different races.

This installation is basically a tutorial installation where the virtual human inside the screen will react and give feedback of greeting in the specific race after the user greets to the installation.

I find this idea is very plain and not interesting to catch audiences eye. And personally I do not like to do cultural-related project. However, due to the lack of time I did not voice out my opinion.

After the group has decided, we proceed to refine our project plan and also creating our presentation slides for tomorrow's presentation.

Ideation 1

We decided to scrap the hologram idea because lacking of man power, budget and also time frame. Also the shoe holographic idea serves no purpose and do not have any problem, it is more commercialized based installation, therefore it did not meet our project's brief requirement.

We continue brainstorming for a new idea, an installation which serves a purpose and overcome a problem.


After researched this installation, we think of creating an installation which shares a similar concept of executing. We wanted to show audiences of people are obsessed with their phones and neglect peoples around them. Creating a virtual human in the screen where user interact with it and it will not give major feedback but just minor movement as if he's been pushed.

Then we started to write our proposal and project plan for Project S.A.M.
I've wrote part of the proposal and also created some sketches and UI.

Project plan submission. After we've done our project plan, we submitted it. Unfortunately, our project plan is not approved by our lecturers. They critiqued the interaction of the installation and also the content behind the installation. Interaction is not good where user push and there's no major feedback from the installation, while content do not have a big impact which can create an awareness to the society.

Research

4/1 - 5/1

These two days are still on research phase, the group and I have did research on interactive installation to see which type of installation are executable within our limited budget, man-power and time frame.

We've discussed different installation to be executed but have not fixed on the idea. The area we've discussed are projection mapping, Kinect game installation, hologram and also Arduino.
